Entity Review
THIS is why you should BUY an album! In this day when everyone simply downloads music, Entity takes you on a multi-sensory tour of an artist’s visual and musical deep soul journey. It is a beautifully intentional sophisticated unveiling into the multi-layered person who is Cha Eun Woo. If you were not a fan of Eunwoo before, you will become one. There are six songs on the CD. Five have an accompanying photo montage book of gallery quality. The album Entity (Self-contained existence) is divided into two versions. One is titled "Each” with cool colors, the other is titled, “Equal” in warm colors.
The 1st photo book in the EACH Version (one regarded individually) and the 2nd song on the CD is “Fu*king Great Time”. Pure and simple this is a sensual and sexy song with a gorgeous photo book. This whole CD said, “I’m a man now” and this song showed the steamy and physical side of his expression. Frankly, at 26 if you are not having a fu*king great time at least sometimes, then you are just working too hard. There is a symbolic glass that is shattered and broken.
The 2nd photo book in the EACH Version and the 3rd song on the CD is “Stay”. This is my personal favorite photo book because of the use of shadow play in all photos. The mood is melancholy and the lyrics, “the sun came up again void and empty” are echoed by the empty glass in most of the photos. As an English teacher the use of poetic devices throughout this album give it depth and breadth that is then also contained in the visual elements for even greater impact. This popular song has a great beat and relatable message. (note: some of the photo books have surprise little Eunwoo selfies that drop out!)
In the EACH Version The 3rd photo book and 4th song from the CD reference the most beautiful song; “Where am I”. It is the song that delves deeply into the profound sense of anguish that one experiences with the loss of a beloved one. Eun Woo sings this with a breathy timbre almost like a prayer and the drum sounds like a heartbeat. The images in the book are of Eun Woo seated in cool blue at a table set for two, floating, empty, languishing chilling with despair. The beautiful lyrics, “So where am I? Drowning in the waves, I want to go under endlessly. Even for a while.” The symbolic glass keeps flowing clear over the rim unable to contain the inside. Watch the MV and the Concept film. Both are conceptually, visually, and musically performed with elegant symbolism and finesse that are simultaneously emotionally charged and yet somehow healing. (U& I, Stay, & You’re the Best also have MV’s and Concept films)
In the warm EQUAL Version (the same in status or quality) the 1st photo book and the first song on the CD is “U & I”. This is a somewhat jazzy upbeat song with pretty imagery painted with metaphoric words that tell about a special friendship. In the photo book the warm crayon child-like drawings on a wall emphasize the approachable friendly face of a happy almost mischievous Eunwoo. He looks healthy and inquisitive, “We share dizzy stories”. The symbolic glass is ½ full but has a spiral of glitter like stars, pretty but impossible to drink.
In the EQUAL Version the 2nd photo book and the fifth song on the CD is “You’re the Best”. Just so you don’t think this artist is caught in a one-sided personality this song and the MV will charm ANY one! He sings this adorable love song to his dog with a complete sincerity that only Eunwoo could pull off. Anyone else would just look cheesy. But somehow you just know he is not making it up for effect it is just him sharing an important part of who he is. It makes me laugh inside. It is yet another reason why I will always be a Cha Eun Woo fan. “You wiggle your small adorable nose… and glow brightly in my world”. Eunwoo’s voice for this song is just perfect! The photo book has him dressed like a “poet” and occasionally smiling, different water glasses and there are 2 or 3 as if company is coming. The glitter is in the air. The symbolism in the photos is so much fun to poke around with!
The only song without visual representation in a photo book is the 6th, “Memories”. This lovely song is my favorite. It is like an embrace for and from EunWoo to himself, to Moonbin, to Astro, to Aroha, to humanity. The simple piano accompaniment and slightly discordant background vocals make it feel like a prayer. “Even if a tomorrow that I can’t know comes, Even if it’s dangerous, I’ll embrace them all.” Eunwoo is such a deeply spiritual man who is brave and strong enough to hold his shoulders in protection. “Don’t be afraid.” We fans and others, are lucky to have his soul on this planet because his work is true and speaks to the light that is within all. Thank-you for such an enormous gift this Spring, Eunwoo. I will be unpacking meaning from your music for years to come I can tell already.
